Juha Hänninen has been involved in the palliative care of cancer patients since 1993. He has written for almost all Finnish-language medical textbooks published by Duodecim, served as a consultant physician and trainer for particularly severe symptomatic problems of cancer patients, and has lectured at all medical faculties, at medical days around Finland, and at events organised by individual hospital districts or hospitals.

During his career, Hänninen has been involved in the palliative care of approximately 10,000 patients, either directly or indirectly, educated both medical students and specialists in palliative care, and developed end-of-life care in Finland nationally and regionally. His specialty is in the treatment of pain and other cancer-related symptoms, including the important part of alleviating and confronting the potential fears and anxieties of patients and their families.
