In physiotherapy, acupuncture is used for pain management. The effects of acupuncture are partially based on the so-called gate control theory and the release of natural, pain-alleviating endorphins in the body. In a nutshell, gate control theory means that acupuncture strives to cause something like a traffic jam that blocks the functioning of the body’s pain-transmitting system.
An acupuncture session typically takes 30 to 40 minutes. The treatment is given by a physiotherapist with acupuncture training.
